I've heard of eating in season, going green, etc. But this year we are living in season. It started this spring because our central air conditioning unit is dying a slow death. It is original to this house built in 1984. We have lived her for 7 years and have had to have it repaired every year that we have lived here. It'll cost about eight to ten thousand to replace it, but it has cost us thousands to repair it over the years. So this year we just let it go. We have not turned it on and we live in Virginia...part of the South. It isn't the deep South, but it is hot and humid none the less. Well, we are super heat loving people so we purchased a few window A/C units...they are so different from the ones my folks had...popped them in the bedrooms, my basement studio and the family room. We turn them on as needed. Well so far this season, we have used them, but we don't always turn them on. We have been comfortable...sweated alot more than in years past, but we have also found that the body does adapt. The heat isn't bothering me as bad as in years past. I get up to the sound of the crickets and the morning doves and I can hear the rustle of the deer in the woods....ah it is a lovely sound. I actually feel more in touch with the earth and the sky and the wind. I also feel a bit of a modern pioneer in a sense. All of my neighbors are shut up, sealed up and one can hear the electric whirr and gear changing of their A/C compressors. I'm not braggin, just relating that it really is nice to be changing, to living in season. Oh, and an unexpected benefit? My husband opened the power bill yesterday and announced that we used half of the energy than we used during the same time last year! Now that is a good green feeling!!!
